The City of Tea Tree Gully was originally named Steventon, after the prominent landowner of the area John Stevens who was an Adelaide Miller. After 1900 the name Steventon was changed to the Township of Tea Tree Gully after the thick, native Tea Trees which were abundant in the area. The name Steventon Ward is a homage to the original name of the area.
